The dominance of TexasHoldEm over the poker scene is a relatively recent phenomenon, with much of the game’s growth coinciding with the Internet-gaming boom of the last 15 years.
But there were poker games and poker players long before the Internet, before the World Series and before the invention of HoldEm itself. Stud and draw poker were immensely popular during the American Civil War, a full half-century before Las Vegas was to look like this:
