South African Online Gambling Bill In Works

A bill that was proposed in South Africa to legalize online gambling is closer to becoming law with recent movement yesterday.

The bill went to committee yesterday. Once the committee is done with the bill, it will go on to the National Assembly for approval.

Online gambling is illegal in South Africa, but the reason it is illegal is solely because the country wanted time to develop its own online gaming systems to protect South African consumers.

The bill in the South African legislature provides recourse for the players if something should go wrong with an online gambling site that is licensed to operate in South Africa.

The Department of Trade and Industry said its goal for the bill is to protect players, ensure gambling revenues are properly taxed, retain interactive gambling players in South Africa and keep children away from the sites.
